Lanzarote Island Hotels

General Information
About 125 km off the Atlantic coast of Africa sits the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Of volcanic origin, the entire island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that drew the attention of Pliny the Elder as far back as two millenia ago. Timanfaya National Park in southwest Lanzarote, covers over 50 km² of land and contains volcanic geysers that remain very popular with tourists. The first resorts on the island were built around the town of Tías, the notable home of 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature recipient, José de Sousa Saramago of Portugal.
Arrecife has been the capital of Lazarote since 1852. A port town of just over 50,000 people, Arrecife contains a popular beach and harbor and is the main point of entry for many tourists to the island. Resorts on the coast of course, are why people come to Lanzarote. The main destinations for prime beach time are Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.
