I regularly travel to Cairns and this is the first time I've stayed at Rydges Tradewinds. I found it to be very average for the price. It is very tired and in need of some basic maintenance and updating. As with another Rydges on the Esplanade in Cairns, it is impossible to set the temperature of the airconditioning and even with the fan on low, it is freezing with the aircon on but too hot with the aircon off. They allow smoking on the balconies and I found that when I had my balcony door open, my room was regularly filled with cigarette smoke from other guests.

Arrived late at night but reception very good. The hotel is in need of a makeover but our room overlooking the esplanade was good as was the pool area. As usual in this arena the price of hotel breakfast led us to take a short and very pleasant walk to get a much better deal nearby.

We booked an oceanfront room and ended up on the 5th floor (532) with great views onto the bay. The room was comfortable enough that we caught ourselves hanging out in there a little too long when we should've been out on the verandah or strolling around town or on the esplanade. However our last night the toilet kept running so you had to unstick the mechanism and the following a.m. we had an early flight ,got up to take hot shower and there was none. Don't know what was going on with that because we had no problems the previous day. If we ever have occasion to go back I would definately stay here though.

It's an older style hotel, but our ocean facing room was great and very spacious. Excellent location as very close to all the restaurants. Also liked the pool and sundeck.
