As one of the most exquisite island destinations in Europe, the autonomous region of Madeira gives Portugal an enviable haunt a mere 650 km off the coast of Morocco. Home of world famous wine, the archipelago features only two inhabited spots in Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island.
Although the islands cotain a resident population in the area of a quarter million, Madeira swells with tourists throughout the year. The lure of pristine coastline, vineyards, rustic cuisine, exotic flora and a notable party scene in the capital city of Funchal prove to be powerful draws to visitors who hail primarily from continental Europe. The islands of Madeira and Porto Santo also offer superb landmarks that originate from as far back as the 15th century. As a special bonus, the proud birthplace of football star Cristiano Ronaldo also boasts two teams in the Portuguese Liga. Madeira has a subtropical climate with typically mild Atlantic Ocean conditions that stem from the proximate influence of the Gulf Stream. As a result, temperatures rarely get unbearable in summer, with average highs of 24°C and stay relatively temperate in winter, with average lows of 13°C.
