Tantalising Te Anau

Te Anau is situated at the bottom of New Zealand. And it’s a bottom so pert you’ll find yourself wanting to admire it from every angle. Sitting on Lake Te Anau, (which borders Fiordland National Park) this is nearly as far south as you can go before falling into the ocean. Don’t panic, though – it would be hard to actually fall off the edge, considering the coast is covered with mountains.

While many people use Te Anau as a stopping ground to get to Milford Sound, there is plenty to do closer to the town itself. In fact, the town is often referred to as the walking capital of the world, due to the many amazing tracks in the area. You can access the likes of the Kepler Track by walking from the town centre. Bottoms up!

TE ANAU’S TOP 10

10. Astronomy Fiordland With no light pollution, this is a perfect place to take in the night sky.

5. Milford Track Crystal-clear rivers, ancient forests, alpine scenery – sure beats the walk to the bus stop every morning.

9. Fiordland Museum History on display – get amongst the old stuff.

4. Lake Marian You will have to use your eyes or Google an image, as there are no words for this type of beauty.

8. Te Anau Wildlife Centre Visit some of New Zealand’s most endangered birds before it’s too late.

3. Glow Worm Caves Only accessible by water, an abundance of glowworms and underground waterfalls await. What more do you want from a cave?

7. Walking Enjoy the freedom and get inspired by the natural beauty in the walking capital of the world.

2. Lake Te Anau Take a boat cruise into the various fiords on the largest lake on the South Island.

6. Underwater World Stay dry as you go beneath the surface and view the rare black coral.

1. Milford Sound Rudyard Kipling called it the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ and it is undeniably one of the most scenic places on the planet.

TE ANAU EVENTS

The Hunters Ball in September may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this black tie event will have you feeling like the glitterati as you bid for various items.

In October, celebrate the colourful landscape at the Te Anau Spring Flower Show.

Also in October is the Te Anau Club’s Annual Fishing Competition. If you fancy yourself as a fisherman, get out on the water.

Get your running shoes on in December for the Nike ACG Kepler Challenge, which will see you running the Kepler Track in this ultra-marathon event. Hope you’ve been training!

Come and join in the fun in Lion’s Park at the New Year’s Eve Party and Fireworks in the Park celebrations.

WHEN TO GO

· Te Anau is a water wonderland, with fiords, lakes and waterfalls. But all this water has to come from somewhere… What we’re trying to say is pack a raincoat if you plan on exploring.

· During the summer, with average temperatures around 22ºC (72ºF), the area also experiences longer twilights, allowing you to pack more into each day.

· Winter is far colder, but no less spectacular.

GETTING AROUND

· When you’re in the walking capital of the world, you walk!

· If you want to visit some of the gorgeous places nearby, a bus is a good, comfortable option.

· Immerse yourself in the splendour on a boat trip through the various fiords.
