With elegance in every corner and the daunting presence of Baroque architecture throughout, Vienna can further impress with its impeccable offerings in theatre, music and cuisine. The city is also most popular for the many musical geniuses whose talents were nurtured in this culturally inclined cosmopolitan crib. During the 18th century, Vienna hummed to the melodies of Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven and Bach among a few.
One more Viennese tradition to experience is its coffeehouses serving rich coffee concoctions and temptingly sweet cakes and pastries! What better way to end a day of sightseeing in one of Europe’s fascinating capitals.
Attractions
Possessing the radiance of a city steeped in history, Vienna has many attractions to speak of. Palaces are magnificent fixtures in the Viennese landscape. Cathedrals serve as stark testaments to the old world. While museums and music halls enliven the social and cultural calendar.
Belvedere Palaces are located within a sprawling park and has two museums within the massive complex. The gardens are an inviting sight when the flowers are all abloom in springtime. Vienna’s grandest palace is Hofburg, its Imperial Castle and home to some of the important museums in Vienna. At the Burgkapelle, Hofburg’s chapel, take part in a wonderful treat as you can listen to the famed Boys Choir lending their heavenly voices during the Sunday mass.
The word grand doesn’t even begin to describe Schonbrunn Palace, another major castle in Vienna’s list. A World Heritage site, it includes a cluster of buildings and wide enormous gardens. A zoo is also found within. Habsburg emperors held residences here thus most of the features are imprints of their taste.
Events
Vienna holds close to its heart some dear old traditions. The Viennese Ball Season running from January to February is one of them, coinciding with the Austrian Carnival. Every weekend sees a swarm of parties in the city with everyone dressed to the nines and waltzing through the night. Society’s elite turn out for the Opernball, the most exclusive and glamorous event during Ball Season.
Summer is an exciting time in Vienna with all the musical fetes! The Film Festival infront of City Hall will delight movie buffs with its free film screenings which celebrates opera season as well. Then when warm weather takes over, cool off at Summerstage which stands at the heart of Vienna where you can enjoy a melange of events in sports, music, culinary arts and more from May to September. The biggest summer gathering is Donauinselfest, popular among youths, local and tourists alike drawn by the free concerts held in Danube Island.
